Our Medallion
Our Institute has adopted an official medallion. It was conceived by a local artist, António Conceição Júnior, and technically produced by “Gravarte”, a specialized Portuguese foundry. Its main characteristic is that it comprises a circle that rotates within a rim.
On the obverve it has the IIM’s logo, a needle in bas-relief (in the circle) and the words June 1999. Macau (in the rim). The other side includes a verse written by Portugal’s national poet Camões, which was chosen as the motto for the first activity organized by the IIM, in June 1999. It was a tribute to Camões, jointly promoted with the World Organization of Poets.
The golden rim contrasts very harmoniously with the bronzed brown of the circle, which contains a mariner’s compass and a hubcap.
This set of elements in low and high relief, together with the needle and the compass, allows the manipulation of the circle, symbolising a universal embrace and translating the IIM’s spirit.
This spirit encompasses the various dimensions of an institution inspired by the heritage of a universal encounter of cultures and humanisms, the opening in every direction and the lusiad vocation of nautical thought as a way to the discovery and edification of the historical times to come.
Collectors may acquire the medallion for MOP 160, € 20 or USD 20 (plus mailing cost).
Members of the IIM are entitled to a 20 per cent discount.
