Canadian Chinese writer Amy Lau Chuen Yim presented the Chinese- and English-language versions of her book “Memories of old Macau: The Story of My Childhood” at the International Institute of Macau (IIM) in Nape on 6 of May 2023. Lau, a retired librarian and teacher living in Edmonton, Alberto, Canada, gave an evocative presentation in Cantonese about her “eight happy childhood years” in Macau that began in 1958, when her family arrived here from her native Guangzhou.

The family moved to Hong Kong when she was 11 years old. The English-language version of her book was published in 2022 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic only on Saturday was Lau finally able to present her book’s original Chinese version and its translation into the English language to the public in Macau, even though both have been on sale for some time in Macau, Hong Kong and elsewhere. The book has been translated into English by Gigi Lam from Macau and Dr Wai Man Chan from Hong Kong. Readers have praised the quality of the translation including its Portuguese-Chinese place names that can be a major challenge for translators, as well as the beautiful paintings of erstwhile Macau by well-known local artist Chan Iu Pui. The book, whose Chinse version has been a bestseller in Hong Kong and Macau, offers a great read – visually enriched to boot – for anyone interested in what Macau was all about between the late 1950s and mid-1960s.

Lau’s presentation was attended, among others, by professionals from Macau’s education and culture sector and students as well as IIM President of the Board of Directors Jorge Rangel, a former policy secretary for Administration, Education and Youth (1991-99) and Board Member Rufino Ramos, a former administrator of the University of Macau (UM). Lau’s husband Dr Brian Chiu “freelanced” as MC at Saturday’s hour-long presentation. After spending some time in Hong Kong, Lau and her husband will return long to Edmonton where she spends her retirement writing and brush painting.

On 24 April, an edition of the biography of a notable figure Comendador Arnaldo de Oliveira Sales was launched at the library of the Club Lusitano in Hong Kong.

The publication by the International Institute of Macau (IIM), in 2021, it was not possible to launch it earlier, due to the events of the Covid-19. The book, supported by the Macau Foundation, featured presentations by Jorge Rangel, president of the IIM, and José Sales Marques, president of the Institute for European Studies of Macau (IEEM), with the participation of members and guests of the Club Lusitano in Hong Kong.

With testimonies from Ambassador Pedro Catarino, General José Eduardo Garcia Leandro, former Governor of Macau, José Sales Marques, the Club Lusitano in Hong Kong and with a preface by Jorge Rangel, the edition portrays the biography of one of the most outstanding and notable personalities of the Portuguese communities in the Far East in the 20th century. Better known as “Sonny Sales”, he was a factor of prestige, inspiration and unity for the Portuguese community in Hong Kong, a natural “leader”, he chaired the Club Lusitano of Hong Kong and the Clube de Recreios. He has served the sports community and the Hong Kong government itself, and has taken important positions in Hong Kong and international organizations, headed the Urban Council, a body corresponding to a large city council, the Hong Kong Olympic Committee, which he was president. He received high national and foreign decorations, including the Order of the British Empire, the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique and the Grand Bauhinia Medal. In Macau, he even gave voice to a documentary produced by the journalist Ana Isabel Dias, entitled “A Voz de Sales”, where he spoke about his life and the most important moments of his career.

The IIM itself awarded Comendador Sales with the Identity Award, in 2005, for his singular figure, and where he honored Portugal and for his respected leadership in the many involved projects.

The edition is a testimony and a tribute to this figure, his life between January 13, 1920 and March 6, 2020, an intense life and at the service of the common good and in defense of noble causes.

IIM has also offer some of its editions to the current president of the Club Lusitano in Hong Kong, Patrick Rozario, enriching the Club's library collection.
